Gail Pickering works across installation, moving image, sound and performance. Through processes of listening, observation and installation, she develops large-scale works concerned with how mediated and environmental systems shape collective perception and embodied experience. Current work focuses on closed ecological systems and environmental simulation, constructing installations shaped by atmospheric control, technological mediation and ecological equilibrium. Through sound, vibration, and moving image, the work explores how systems designed to regulate environmental and perceptual experience produce embodied uncertainty and atmospheric drift. Earlier work engages with the performative and political afterlives of community television, its surviving recordings and collective representation through multi-channel installations and performances centred on transmission, estrangement and the unstable relation between recorded images, historical memory and collective subjectivity. Recorded images and transmissions acquire material and performative agency beyond their original historical conditions, with surviving media treated not as archival documents but as active and contingent material. Installations, performances and moving image works have been presented internationally at institutions including BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Tate Modern, Tate Britain and the ICA, London. Her work has been included in British Art Show 7, Assembly: A Survey of Artists’ Film and Video in Britain, and the Derek Jarman Award touring programme. Related films have premiered at the BFI London Film Festival and been broadcast on Channel 4. Pickering holds an MFA from Goldsmiths, University of London and a practice-based PhD from the University of Westminster. She is Founding Programme Director of the MA Artists’ Film & Moving Image at Goldsmiths, University of London.
